As Indians, we are very talented at giving advice, whether it’s about finances, lifestyle or health. So here I am to advice you to give more advice on the health of people. Even if one out of hundred takes a piece of advice and change their lifestyle accordingly, that one change can make a big difference.
We have seen that here people often trust on their neighbours or friends more than their family members and doctors when it comes to their health. This reliance on community wisdom has roots in our rich tradition of passing down health tips from generation to generation. Our dadi’s and nani’s “nuskhe” (home remedies) to keep their loved ones healthy may sound outdated but were miraculous. Some examples include burning the camphor to purify the air, applying turmeric paste to the wound, their special ginger and tulsi tea for sore throat and cough, special massages to ease digestive discomfort, and the list continues. What’s more, many of them have been validated by modern science.
Thus, I believe that every citizen of our country may help towards achieving health for all by just doing one thing they love to: give prudent advice!
Here are some few tips that you may share with as many people as you can:
- Get Moving: A sedentary lifestyle is a major contributor to various health problems. Encourage people to adopt an active lifestyle that includes at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per week. Whether it’s walking, cycling, or dancing—what matters is that we keep moving.
- Stay Hydrated: Encourage people to drink enough water throughout the day. Carry a water bottle wherever you go. Start the day with a glass of water and aim for at least 8-10 glasses daily.
- Color your plate: Remind people to include a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables in their diet. Aiming for five servings of fruits and vegetables daily can make a noticeable difference.
- Practice Portion Control: Overeating is a common issue, especially with calorie-dense foods. Share the idea of using smaller plates and mindful eating, encouraging people to savour each bite and stop when they’re full. This can help manage weight and prevent digestive issues.
- Unwind: Mental health is just as important as physical health. Advise people to find simple ways to unwind daily, whether it’s a walk, reading, or spending time with loved ones. This helps reduce stress, which has a direct impact on overall health.
- Prioritize Sleep: Many people underestimate the importance of sleep. Recommend aiming for 7-8 hours of good-quality sleep each night, as it plays a crucial role in maintaining immune function, mental clarity, and overall energy levels.
- Limit Screen Time: Excessive screen time can strain the eyes, disrupt sleep, and contribute to a sedentary lifestyle. Encourage people to take regular breaks, follow the 20-20-20 rule (look at something 20 feet away every 20 minutes for 20 seconds), and avoid screens at least an hour before bed.
- Maintain Good Posture: Many people develop back, neck, and shoulder problems due to poor posture, especially while working on computers or phones. Remind others to sit up straight, keep screens at eye level, and stretch regularly to avoid strain.
- Wash Hands Regularly: Hand hygiene is crucial for preventing infections. Encourage washing hands with soap for at least 20 seconds, especially before eating or after coming in from outside. Handwashing helps prevent the spread of germs and keeps illnesses at bay.
- Leverage Traditional Remedies with Caution: While traditional practices like using turmeric for wounds or drinking herbal teas can be beneficial, it’s important to approach them with scientific understanding. Share remedies that have been proven effective and encourage others to consult healthcare professionals when needed.
Small changes in daily habits can have a big impact on health. Imagine if each one of us took the initiative to share just one piece of prudent advice with our neighbors, family or friends we could spark a wave of positive change across the country.
So, let’s make health a topic of everyday conversations. Share these tips with as many people as you can, and together, we can work toward achieving health for all.
