We all know that National Medical Commission (NMC) as per the Graduate Medical Education Regulations (GMER) Guidelines 2023 1 previously GMER 2019, the Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) 2 have framed five attributes to an Indian Medical Graduate (IMG). One has to be a Clinician, a Communicator, a Leader, a Life-Long Learner and a Professional, in short, C2L2P.
Now this quote caught my attention and I began to delve into deep its meaning and its significance in our day -to-day lives as a faculty.
When we harp on the first quote, i.e. “Once you understand the power of your words, you won’t just say anything” it truly signifies what a Communicator must do, he /she is not just there to communicate. Sometimes we communicate not only verbally, but we do through some non-verbal cues too. So also, it brings in the component of a Clinician here, where we cannot tell everything whatever comes to our mind, to the patient or the patient party. We must be equally sensitive and sensible to each and every person and situations concerned.
Next comes “Once you understand the power of your thoughts, you won’t just think anything.” It emphasizes the attribute of Professionalism. We must learn to be Professional in our work place, we must not be judgemental at anyone’s comments and be carried away. We must decide thinking ourselves in some other’s shoes and then only we can understand the power of our thought process. We will be more rational in our approach.
Coming to the next point, which states” and once you understand the power of your presence, you won’t just be anywhere, know your Worth” This is what Leadership is. A leader is a visionary, and he /she understands his/her value and position and so doesn’t look for any external validation. They are comfortable in their own skin and what they contribute to the society at large.
Last but not the least, it is Life-Long Learning of all these attributes. Then only can we dream of a better future and a responsible society for ourselves. We have to ingrain such qualities in us as Faculty and percolate them among the students so that they imitate in their own lives. Quotes in our lives play a crucial role, they pervade all ages and is equally relevant to all situations and so is the above, which sums up all the attributes we are seeking from our students who are going to be the future torch-bearers of the Society.
